Russia has expressed its support for Vietnam’s potential membership in the BRICS grouping, highlighting the country’s active participation in BRICS events in 2024. A statement issued by both nations affirms Russia’s readiness to assist Vietnam in joining the bloc. This comes after Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s participation in the BRICS Plus/Outreach summit in Kazan in October 2024, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The joint statement also emphasizes the growing partnership between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Both countries support the deepening of this cooperation, based on the 2018 memorandum of understanding on economic collaboration between ASEAN and the Eurasian Economic Commission, as well as the 2005 memorandum between the secretariats of ASEAN and SCO. These agreements are seen as vital steps towards creating a common space for peace, stability, mutual trust, security, development, and prosperity across Greater Eurasia.
